PUASAR005A - Undertake Confined Space Rescue 

The aim of this course is to provide the participant with the knowledge and skills to participate in a confined space rescue.

DescriptionThis unit covers the competency to undertake rescue in confined spaces as defined in AS2865 as a member of a single agency or multi-disciplinary team.

Unit/s of Competence 
Participants attending this course are required to demonstrate a high level knowledge and skill sufficient to enable them to demonstrate the concepts facilitated.  The participants will only be expected to apply their knowledge in the context facilitated.  
AccreditationParticipants who successfully complete the course will be issued with an Identification card & certificate. 
 Course Content
  • Relevant legislation explained.
  • Case studies of unsafe confined space entry.
  • Rescue considerations, roles and responsibilities.
  • Establishing a command and control centre.
  • Notification of emergency services.
  • Risk assessments and hazard control.
  • Permits to work and other entry procedures.
  • Preserving the accident scene.
  • Gas awareness and atmospheric monitoring
  • Ventilation and cleaning methods
  • Isolation and tag out methods
  • Breathing apparatus use
  • Safe working at height including, tripods, harnesses, fall arrest and insertion/recovery equipment
  • Fire extinguisher use
  • Search and rescue drills in a confined space.
  • Practical exercise for persons to conduct an
    actual rescue from a confined space.
  • Prepare for confined space rescue operation
  • Assess and manage confined space/trench rescue
  • Determine location and condition of casualties

Pre-Requisites 

Successful completion of the following:

- Enter Confined Space PMAPER205B

- Work in accordance with an issued Permit PMAPER200C

- Operate Breathing Apparatus PMAOHS216B

The information is aligned to relevant NSW Occupational Health and Safety legislation, the National Code of Practice for Safe working in confined spaces, and various Australian Standards and CDSCC site procedures and equipment.
Resources Required 
Suitable venues will be required to conduct both the theoretical and practical aspects of the training.  It is most beneficial if access to site structures can be obtained for practical exercises.  This needs to be arranged prior to the commencement of training if possible.
*All equipment will be provided.
